Advances in technology have allowed FSRDC to offer another treatment option to meet our patient’s lifestyle needs. Home Hemodialysis (HHD) with the NxStage System has become the preference of thousands of people who enjoy the health and quality-of-life benefits of more frequent and shorter hemodialysis treatments, when and where they wish.
On November 6, 2023, FSRDC reinstated Home Hemodialysis training and currently have 2 patients in training and 13 patients on a waiting list. There are many advantages to HHD:
- 40% of patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) die from heart-related complications.
- Up to 75% of patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) suffer from a heart complication called left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH), a thickening of the heart.
- LVH can develop as a result of the heart having to work harder, and puts patients at a higher risk of a heart attack or stroke.
- More frequent and shorter dialysis may be better for your heart. With fewer ups and downs in fluid levels, HHD users with more frequent and shorter treatments have as much as an 11% reduction in LVH.
- Hemodialysis patients with more frequent and shorter treatments experience 17% fewer heart- related hospitalizations compared to those who treat incenter 3x/week.
- Reduced need for blood pressure medications.
- Increased chance of receiving a kidney transplant.
While Home Hemodialysis therapy is not for everyone, it may be an option you want to consider. Talk to your doctor or nurse about whether you are a good candidate for it and what risks or benefits you can expect.
